In the Hebrew Scriptures, māšîaḥ (מָשִׁיחַ) simply means anointed.
To an ancient Israelite, mashiach was not a surname, and it was not limited to one individual. It was a role given by the Supreme King Yhwh to accomplish a specific purpose.
Throughout the Tanakh:
Kings were anointed to govern with justice
Priests were anointed to serve and teach
Deliverers were anointed to rescue the people
At times, even foreign rulers were called the Supreme King Yhwh’s anointed when they were used to fulfill His will.
What mattered was not lineage alone, but appointment, obedience, and function.
Mashiach was never self-appointed.
Mashiach never served personal ambition.
Mashiach always operated under the authority of the Supreme King Yhwh.
This ancient framework raises an important question:
Are we discussing a person — or a divinely assigned role within Israel’s story?
House of Balance Ministries invites you to explore mashiach within the worldview of the people who first received the Scriptures.
Check out the scriptures below to bring out the understanding that the Supreme King Yhwh (God) gave to those who were faithful in the scriptures and through a few examples of those He sent.

Mashiach means “anointed”
Scriptures:
1 Samuel 24:6 – Saul is called the Supreme King Yhwh’s anointed
Leviticus 4:3 – the anointed (Ha'mashicah) priest (הַכֹּהֵן הַמָּשִׁיחַ)
Psalm 105:15 – “Touch not My anointed ones.”
Why do these matter:
They show mashiach is a functional designation, not a unique messianic figure. Kings, priests, and even plural “anointed ones” exist.
Kings, priests, and deliverers were all called mashiach
Scriptures:
1 Samuel 16:13 – David anointed as king
Exodus 28:41 – Aaron and sons anointed for priesthood
Judges 3:9–10 – The Supreme King Yhwh raises a deliverer (no title, but same function)
Why these matter:
They establish the threefold anointed roles in Israel: governance, service, deliverance.
Mashiach always served the will of the Supreme King YHWH
Scriptures:
1 Samuel 10:1, 6–7 – Saul anointed to serve the Supreme King Yhwh’s purpose
Psalm 2:2–4 – The Supreme King Yhwh’s anointed operates under divine authority
Isaiah 45:1–6 – Cyrus explicitly called mashiach
Why these matter:
They prove mashiach is subordinate, never autonomous.
Cyrus as a non-Israelite mashiach
Scriptures:
Isaiah 45:1 – direct use of “His anointed” for Cyrus
Isaiah 44:28 – Cyrus fulfills the Supreme King Yhwh’s purpose
Ezra 1:1–4 – fulfillment through Cyrus’ decree
Why these matter:
This confirms mashiach is appointment-based, not ethnicity-based only.
